Hi! My name is Zachary Arthur, creator of CBD Consumer Research and science nerd extraordinaire.

From Science Nerd to Science Educator

When I was a kid I started out on my quest to geek-dom by launching model rockets, experimenting with a starter chemistry set, and building robots. That enthusiasm for all things scientific continued as I got older and led to me getting my Bachelors in Biology and later a Masters in Medical Science.

I couldn’t keep my love for science to myself, though, so I decided to teach. In the last 13 years I have taught everything from neuroscience to undergrads at Boston University, science history for gifted high schoolers in South Korea, climate science to grade school students in China and applied physics to young adults in Kenya.

While teaching all over the world has been pretty amazing, I am very excited about sharing my knowledge and skills with an even bigger audience about something I have both experience with and a passion for: the science of CBD and its effects on human health.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

There’s an expression in the scientific community that was first introduced over 900 years ago and has been quoted by Isaac Newton, used as a book title by Stephen Hawking, and even established itself in pop culture. ‘Standing on the shoulders of giants’ is the idea that any new scientific knowledge depends on the knowledge that came before it.

More importantly, it conveys how important it is for valuable information to be shared for the benefit of others. To that point, the knowledge and skills I have acquired as a scientist and educator are not uniquely mine. They should be shared so they can be of use to others, too.

With that in mind, one of the major functions of this site is to make information about CBD and related medical research easily accessible to anyone who wishes to learn about it. Most of us have at least heard about CBD by now, so what now becomes increasingly important is understanding what it is and how it can be used to support better health.

Will the Real CBD Please Stand Up?

The business of CBD is a relatively new and incredibly fast-growing industry. While this is, overall, a good thing, it does create certain challenges for consumers to be sure they are purchasing their products from brands they can trust.

For instance, while there is a huge body of research supporting the health benefits of using CBD, there are also a large number of companies and brands making unfounded claims about what CBD can do for improving your overall wellbeing. To make matters worse, some of these businesses attempt to lure vulnerable customers into believing that CBD can ‘cure’ serious medical problems without providing any kind of scientific evidence. Obviously the worst of these more recent claims is that CBD can in any way treat or cure coronavirus or COVID-19.

Another problem exists with how the CBD industry is currently being regulated. Somewhat surprisingly, while CBD is now legal for adults to consume throughout most of the United States, the Food & Drug Administration has only approved one product containing CBD to date: a prescription medication used to treat a couple of rare and debilitating forms of epilepsy. So, that CBD-infused cookie you ate last week? Yeah, the FDA has no idea what’s actually in that thing.

The Good, The Bad, and The Certified

The good news is that businesses producing and selling CBD products can still be verified by external, third-party agencies whose job is to ensure a product contains the same amount of CBD a company says it does. Things like a COA (Certificate of Analysis) or GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) Certification can let you know a CBD business is legit.

Bad news is that there are businesses out there that fly under the radar of third-party certification and will gladly take your money while selling you a product that actually contains little (if any) CBD.

This is how CBD Consumer Research is different from other sites. Here, you will only find certified CBD products from trustworthy brands that provide evidence for their claims, up-to-date medical research on what CBD can do for you, and the information you need to make an informed decision about what you want to buy.

Because there shouldn’t be any guesswork in choosing better health.
